Paging Captain Obvious

December 5, 2009

Old Woman: “What is your soup of the day?”
Me: “We have a choice of Spicy Tortilla Soup or Smoked Salmon
Chowder.”
Old Woman: “Is the Spicy Tortilla Soup very spicy?”
Me: “Yeah, pretty much.” (really?…)
Old Woman: “Is the Smoked Salmon very fishy? I don’t like things very
fishy.”
Me: “Smoked salmon is definatly fishy.”
Old Woman: “I’ll try it, it sounds good.”

5 minutes later I bring it out. She takes a lick of the spoon, gags
and gets bug eyed and says.. “That’s too fishy. I can’t eat that.” and
then shoves the bowl back at me, making these horrible gutteral sounds
at the back of her throat and wiping her mouth desperatly with her
napkin. You’d think in your 70 long years of life you’d have the
wisdom to realize a fish tastes fucking fishy.

There’s quite a few of these types out there to deal with Barbie, one of my favourites are those idiots, and you know who you are, that after ordering a weak de café coffee come back waving it at you going this has no flavour. Check out this story also http://www.waitersfriend.com.au/blog/2009/12/i-want-another-table/

I once had a douchebag send a sandwich back because “the ham is too hammy!”

People don’t know what they like out there.

PurpleGirl- Ironically the same lady who sent that soup back, also sent our split pea and ham soup back for the exact same reason! I guess ham isn’t supposed to be salty and taste like ham!

waiterextraordinaire- I think people know what they like.. they just don’t realize they can’t expect it every where they go. Our chicken might not taste like what they make at home, but if they want it to, then they need to stay home and cook for themselves.

lee- I read that story and.. wow. If anyone ever told me I wrecked their evening for being kind, I would let them have it. I would never survive in a place where I couldn’t stand up for myself. I’m lucky to basically run where I work and have complete freedom to tell anyone off that I feel like.

Fish doesn’t all taste fishy. “Fishy” is usually a description for the taste version of that smell you get when you’re near the docks or an outdoor fish market. There are tons of fish that don’t taste fishy; grouper, halibut, wahoo, tuna (if it’s in steak form), etc. A good chowder should taste like fish, but it shouldn’t be too fishy. Calling a ham too “hammy” is ridic though.

I mean given that the lady was a blue hair and her taste buds went out with bell-bottoms, I doubt she could tell either way, but still.
