I work at a store where I am constantly running to the back getting
whatever it is that the customer wants. This one day i was helping a
woman in our seasonal department. She told me that she wanted a table
and points which one she wants and I run to the back for a flat bed.
So I get the flat bed and load this big glass patio table onto it.
Just to let you know I’m 19 years old, 5′ 4″, and a female and had to
lift the table by myself. Getting back to the story. I push the flat
up to the check lanes and wait a good ten minutes for the customer. We
wait in line for another ten minutes. Finally, we get outside and the
customer tells me she’s going to get her car. She then notices
something and says, “Oh darn it! I got the wrong one!” I was way over
pissed because now i had to go back inside, wait for hear to get her
money back, and take this glass table back to its proper place. I just
wish people would pay more attention to what they want before you have
a employee dripping with sweat.

I liked this story. @ slerver I’ve always thought this was more of a service industry rant site, not just servers. It does seem like the author of this is in the service industry; she deals with customers, often is expected to go above and beyond her actual duties and her job does seem to be way more physically demanding than yours and mine.
@ hard@work I agree! People don’t really seem to realize that they are really putting someone out when they don’t know what they want, be it a different table or a different dressing for their salad. Granted, your scenario is way more time consuming and physically tolling, but nevertheless, they are both frustrating.
Touched a nerve I see. Well go fuck your self you little cash register ringing whore.
Fuck Slerver and his shitty/nasty comments polluting this site. But I have to agree that I don’t really enjoy reading retail rants here. I was a retail slave for many years, I know it sucks… but this is stuckSERVING.com.
SERVER website..what does this have to do with anything?!
This may be a server website, but I can see the connection between workngrl and my own server job.
We both deal with guests/customers who want something and are asking us to get it for them. Only to suddenly realise that they had asked for the wrong thing.
So let apply it to the server industry…… You get a table who places their order with you, you repeat it back and everything is correct. Now at this point you ring in the order, when the order comes out everything is as it should be, you take it to the table and low and behold, its not what they expected it to look like. They wanted the Veal Milanese and not the Veal Marsala……. So now you have to rush back to the kitchen with their order and have the kitchen make the meal on the fly, then you get it back out to them. Obviously they didn’t think to ask their waiter about the difference between the two items and they most definitely didn’t read the damn menu. And now you think they are morons and that because of an error, which wasn’t actually your fault, you get a shitty tip…….. and now your pissed.
Workngrl’s scenario is very much the same, started off with the guest /customer looking for something, it is gotten for them, then realising it was not what she actually wanted, so obviously they didn’t read the box and now you have a poor frazzled worker who is also shattered because they just lugged a huge patio table……. and now the worker is pissed too.
However the guys do have a point, from what I can see this site is a server rant site, but I do understand where you are coming from on this, I used to do retail when I was in my teens, but now I am a server and have been for 15yrs now and I love it…… even I have had my fair share of rude/arrogant/stupid/moronic/ignorant/drunken/slutty/aggressive/ mild/pleasant/nice/lovely/ugly as sin/beautiful/gay/straight/married/divorced and……DINE & DASHERS. But I will never give it up.
Wow, kids! Plenty of service industry complaint sites to go around! And though, as a restaurant guy, I especially like this site, it took me a while to find it. Had to go through “Not Always Right” et al. to find a site specific to my job. But I enjoyed the tales of woe from people working in retail, automotive, libraries, universities, government, marketing, and so on and so forth, because they deal with the same frustration- serving customers who are fuckin’ idiots.
“Hard@Work” obviously didn’t know that this was an EXCLUSIVELY RESERVED site for RESTAURANT service industry people. Her mistake. And honestly, it wasn’t a bad anecdote. And honestly, I didn’t know it was an EXCLUSIVELY RESERVED site for RESTAURANT folk, either Until I read on for a bit. Cut her some slack. She shared her story, and immediately was shit on. At least she’s trying to work.
People, we’re all in the same boat. Let’s bitch about the common enemy- our fuckin’ idiot customers.
I could NEVER tell a small, 19 year-old girl to “Fuck off!” with her “shitty retail job”, nor would I call her a “little cash register-ringing whore”, who apparently, once again, needs to “Fuck Off” .
No! I would reserve those comments for the 19 year-old girl at my table who, along with her hungry family, is a fuckin’ idiot.
