I walk up to a table today and see a middle-aged woman (around 40) hanging on a guy who looks barely 25. I tell them the specials and ask them what they would like to drink. The lady replies, “Margarita” and the guy asks for a beer. Now I am stuck in a very awkward situation here, I obviously didn’t ask for her ID because she is old enough to be my mother and now I have to ask for this guy’s ID because he looks way younger than 30 and I like my job. So I nonchalantly ask for his ID and just when I think I am in the clear Cougar pipes up and says, “Hey, why didn’t you ask for my ID!!?” I give an awkward chuckle and smile while I check the dates on his ID and notice Lover-boy is only 23. She again says, “Hey, why didn’t you check mine, do I look too old or something??” Now I’m irritated…I’ve had it with this desperate cougar giving me a hard time for doing my job, she could have just let me check his ID, not said anything and saved us both an awkward moment, but since she wants to draw attention to the obvious I decide to get even. I turn toward her and smile my most sugary, innocent server smile and say, ” Of course not Ma’am, you look gorgeous, I just wanted to make sure your son was of age! I’ll be right back with your cocktails!” I turned on my heel and immediately scurried away from the table before the Cougar could say anything. The rest of the meal she barely looked at me and I wasn’t surprised when I didn’t get a tip, but man it was worth it to see the look on her face!

Ginny, why are you waitressing if not to make tips? How hard could it have possibly been to card both of them? The “cougar” was obviously embarassed because she looked older than her date; there was no need to insult her. Maybe you should get another job where manners aren’t important, like…oh wait, forget it.
Oh please, ex. So many wonmen make it awkward when you card/don’t card. No matter how polite you are, they make it awkward, and then feel stupid, not the server’s fault. Have some grace, if you’re carded, hand it over. If not, oh well. It doesn’t mean you look old, just that you look old enough. On a side note, when you’re in your 20′s and get carded, why do some chicks have to try and turn it into a compliment, as in, “oh, THANK you! I’m sooo flattered!”. gimme a break…the law is under 35, so really, it’s not flattering you to think you’re still in your 20′s when you ARE!!!
I didn’t make it as clear as I could have, but my point was that it’s not very smart for a waitress to purposely insult a customer. You are there at work to make tips. You make more in tips if the customer likes you. So flatter the customer if that’s what it takes. Awkward schmawkward, do your job, be cheerful and gracious, and move on to the next table. If it becomes a battle of wills between a customer and a server, the server will ALWAYS lose, because the customers don’t have to tip you. Life is short, don’t waste your time in a difficult job like waiting tables making it harder than it has to be. Trust me, I’ve been there.
oh please…cause i’m sure she’s acts that way towards every table…it would have been worth it to me to see the look on the coug’s face. how much could they really have tipped her??
“…it would have been worth it to me to see the look on the coug’s face.”
Why?
AMAZING. I laughed so so hard. I would have totally done the same thing. Of course you waitress to make tips, but if you do the same thing everyday, over and over agian, you’ll go crazy. you need stories like this to remind you how much fun you can have.
Did you not read the part where she mentioned it was worth it to her, ex-server? So, why do you care? Just read the damn story. I think completely owning that stupid attention-whore and being able to tell this story is well worth the 2 dollars she seemed destined to make from them in the first place.
